Markets

Even the Vikings organised regular markets to offer their goods for sale, trade and make contacts. The Haithabu Viking Museum commemorates and revives this historical tradition with its markets in spring, summer and autumn.

And even today, whether you attend a weekly market or the annual Gottorfer Landmarkt, the Dommarkt or one of our Christmas fairs – you will still trade, chat and be entertained at Schleswig's markets like the Vikings did.

Weekly markets

Delicious products from the region, many of them in organic quality - this is what the weekly markets in Schleswig offer. They are the right places-to-be for all who treasure high and fresh quality in their foods

The largest weekly market takes place every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Stadtfeld. In times of funfairs – which are set on the same grounds - it moves to the parking lot in Friedrich-Ebert-Straße.

Further markets offering mostly regional products offer their goods every Tuesday and Friday on Capitolplatz and every Thursday in Friedrichsberg.

    Jumble sales

Records, books, crockery, clothes, bric-à-brac and antiques: Schleswig's flea markets offer visitors the opportunity to go bargain hunting in a relaxed atmosphere.

The flea markets take place once a month in the covered multi-storey car park, from March/April to September/October also monthly on the Stadtfeld, in Friedrichsberg and at the Toom DIY store.

      Gottorf Farmer’s Market

The Gottorfer Landmarkt is regarded as the largest open-air eco-market in Germany. Every spring, it attracts thousands of visitors to the island of the castle.

In total, more than 150 exhibitors present their high quality products and services produced exclusively according to ecologically sustainable and eco-fair conditions.

The market is also an annual meeting point for a lively exchange between producers and consumers. Visitors, farmers and traders get into conversation, associations and initiatives seize the opportunity to network.

        Christmas markets

On Capitolplatz, "Schleswig – City of Christmas" visitors immediately fall into the right mood for the Christmas holidays. Those who love the magic glimmer of the pre-Christmas season will be in the right place in Schleswig. Several Christmas markets spread a festive and contemplative atmosphere everywhere.

In December, decorated stalls offer nice little Christmas presents or arrangements for the Advent, merry-go-rounds are jingling for the children and a wide choice of aromatic wintry delicacies such as mulled wine and roasted almonds attract visitors from all over the German Danish border region to Schleswig's city centre.

Geschmückte Buden mit kleinen Weihnachtsgeschenken oder Adventsgestecken, ein Kinderkarussell, Leckereien wie Glühwein und gebrannte Mandeln locken die Besucher im Dezember in Schleswigs Innenstadt.

The classic Christmas market in the Stadtmuseum and especially the Schwahlmarkt at the cathedral are also a prime address for high-quality handicrafts.

        Schwahlmarkt

Far beyond Schleswig’s city boundaries, the Schwahlmarkt is well-known for its pallet of arts and crafts. In the unique atmosphere of the cloister of St. Petri's Cathedral artisans use the chance to present their crafts and artwork. The Schwahlmarkt is complemented by an extensive supporting programme entertaining with concerts, lectures, devotions and a special children's programme

          Funfairs

Do you prefer to be shaken up in the “Superhopser” roundabout? Do you enjoy the view from the Ferris wheel or do you like spooking in the “Tunnel of Horror” ghost train?

The traditional funfairs in Schleswig are inviting the whole family to come and enjoy themselves.

Every year in spring at the Dommarkt and in late summer at the Peermarkt, a colourful mix of rides, games and snack stalls provide entertainment and pleasure on Schleswig’s Stadtfeld. You can’t miss it!
